Great to see the awards process underway.
Just wondering whether it might help to pool some info together for the nominations process.
Some artists are obviously great at documenting their work online - but there are plenty that aren't.
It seems to me that until a painting is published, it is often difficult to know it even exists, let alone when it was painted. I am sure there are plenty of awesome paintings done in 2009 that are still unpublished, and appear nowhere online.
Without input/suggestions from artists or their agents, this initial nomination process is tricky. |

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to myself be approaching artists about the award and asking "waddaya got?".
Given that Patrick's got the Illustration Exchange affiliated with Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists, perhaps an invite to their members to submit some works if they feel like it. Another alternative might be emails to a few well placed individuals like Jane, Alison Eldred or Irene Gallo who between them probably know at least half the active artists and new fantastic artwork put out each year?
Otherwise I figure the eligibility criteria probably has to be a bit blurry around the edges, - namely if you see a book with artwork you like with a 2010 (or is it 2009?) publication date, scan it and send it in, likewise if you've got artwork you want to nominate that you know is only recent then submit it and unless anyone can prove the contrary it's in. There's nothing wrong with that, - it is supposed to be a fun collector driven award, but it does put the onus on us to search out eligible works and satisfy ourselves as to when they were created...

| I am not plugged into the goings-on well enough to make informed nominations. |

Don't worry about not knowing absolutely everything that's out there . . . . that's the reason we've got lots of people able to nominate. If folks just nominate pieces they are aware of, odds are that - with all those people - we'll end up getting pretty good coverage. After all, there aren't actually THAT many paintings in a given year that have a really legitimate argument to be the BEST painting of the year.
The Chesley nominees are a good place to start - everything on the ASFA site at the moment (for the 2010 awards) would be eligible for the Illie, except for the digital pieces.
All of the nominees WILL be posted for voting. Then those posted images will be winnowed down to the top 5, which will comprise the final ballot and voting will then determine which of those is the winner.
So there's no reason not to nominate - even you only know of one painting that might be good enough, nominate it. If voters don't agree with you, it won't make the final 5. But your nomination won't affect the chances of other paintings to be posted for voting.

Okay-- I don't think I know the categories, but I will kick off by nominating my son's Garden of the Enchantress by Raoul Vitale, which can be seen here in the Gallery. _________________ ----SableStar |

| Ok, I am really going to go through and make nominations this weekend. Can someone repost the rules? Is it anything from the past year? 2009 only? Etc? Limit on nominations? |

Howdy!
Any traditionally created work from 2009 is eligible for the award. We'll use the same rules as the Chesleys, which means that a painting that was created in 2009 and not published is eligible, as well as pieces with 2009 publication dates. (If it was published for the first time in 2009, then it doesn't matter if it was technically painted in December 2008, for example).
Each person can nominate up to three works. All nominated works will be posted on the IlluXCon site for voting, which will narrow the total down to the top five final nominees. They will then be voted on, and a winner selected.
Just email your nominations - with images - to me at tsrart@munchkinpress.com.
Thanks!
